A local MP has responded to questions after voting against a motion calling for a ceasefire in Gaza. 

For the last few weeks, eyes around the world have closely monitored the escalating situation between Israel and Palestine. Following an attack by terrorist organisation Hamas on October 7, tensions between the two countries have increased. 

As a result of the ongoing violence, there have been a number of calls for a ceasefire to allow for humanitarian aid to reach those in need. 

Earlier this month the SNP put forward a King’s Speech amendment to the Commons. The amendment called for “all parties to agree to an immediate ceasefire” in Gaza. 

Last week, MP’s took a vote on this motion, including local MP for North Cornwall Scott Mann and MP for Torridge & West Devon Sir Geoffrey Cox 

Mr Mann voted against the motion. 

The Post approached Mr Mann to ask why he voted this way. 

In response he said: “It’s important to separate the Palestinian people from the terror organisation Hamas. 

“Hamas carried out a brutal attack on the people of Israel. Hamas will not lay down their arms, they have stated their intentions and will not respect a ceasefire. 

“There is a need to allow humanitarian pauses to get much needed aid into the area. The international community is committed to preventing wider regional conflict and instability that is where our focus should be. 

“Israel must also abide by its international obligations.” 

The Post has also contacted Sir Geoffrey Cox but did not receive a comment before going to press.
