Launceston is welcoming back one of its historic groups as the town’s Women’s Institute reforms.
Back in August, residents within the North Cornwall town announced their aim to re-launch the WI and bring back to life a group which had served the community and brought residents together for over a century, having launched after the end of the Great War in April 1919.
Following the impact of the coronavirus pandemic which restricted the involvement of the group’s members, in June 2021, Launceston WI closed down.
Kathy Reed, WI advisor for the area, explained: “A few members had managed to keep together during the COVID pandemic, but numbers had sadly diminished.
“In its time the WI had joined in many community activities and was an ever-present exhibitor in the Launceston Agricultural Show. There were always many crafts, cookery and floral arrangements on show. In recent years they had a very successful quiz team and several times carried off with the trophy at the County Federation Quiz.
“WIs are an important part of any community. They offer many opportunities for learning new skills and making friends. The WI has also been a strong campaigner over the years.
“We are always looking for opportunities to open new WIs and reforming those that have been suspended or closed.”
However, after two years, the town can now welcome back this historic group following its re-launch!
So far, there are 12 members with a very enthusiastic committee of four.
WI adviser Kathy Reed, who formed the WI on November 22, said, “Mighty oaks from little acorns grow.”
Unfortunately, due to illness, several members were unable to be at the re-formation meeting, but are hopeful they will join next month.
The group’s December meeting will be held on December 13 and will include a short business and planning meeting followed by festive food and activities.
Speaking to the Post, chair of the Cornwall Federation of WI’s, Helen Kestie said: “The committee is drawing up a good selection of speakers and demonstrations which will be announced shortly, and also are already talking about Launceston Show and Royal Cornwall Show.
“As this WI is a re-formation of a prior WI in the Launceston area, there is no break in the length of time of the WI’s existence. therefore Lanson will celebrate its 105th birthday in 2024!”
The group will meet on the third Wednesday of each month at 7.30 pm in St Mary’s Church Hall, Launceston.
