A PRIMARY school in Launceston which had to be rebuilt after not meeting building regulation standards, has finally opened its doors.

Launceston Primary School, announced this week that its new purpose-built site is ready, marking an exciting new chapter in the school’s journey.

Back in May 2023, demolition began at Launceston’s newly built school site, after it was found that the half-built facility did not meet the required regulation standards. As such the school was torn down and rebuilt.

The school was left half-built when it was found that it didn’t meet the Department for Education’s ‘strict standards’ (Tindle)

Initially penned for a December 2024 reopening, work continued into the new year before finally welcoming staff and students into the site on February 24, following the half term break.

A spokesperson from Athena Learning Trust said: “The new school building will provide an incredible learning environment for all pupils, offering state-of-the-art facilities that will enhance educational experiences and support the school’s commitment to offering world-class learning. Staff at Launceston Primary School are looking forward to bringing both current and future families into this bright new space.”

During the rebuilding process, students have been working from the Launceston College grounds, which is also part of the Athena Learning Trust.

The spokesperson continued: “The new building is a brilliant asset to the pupils, staff and entire school community, all of whom are extremely excited for this new chapter in Launceston Primary School’s adventure.”

Kate Eyre, principal at Launceston Primary School said: "We are absolutely delighted to have moved on to our new site, and we know the facilities will be a huge asset to both pupils and staff. The new building will provide a fresh and inspiring space for everyone to thrive.

“All children have the right to a world class education which is rich in aspiration, experience, discovery, play and wonder - and I am just so proud that our new school building matches the height of these aspirations.”
