“Interesting Encounters” was the title of the latest afternoon talk at the Thursday Friendship Group at Holsworthy Methodist Church.
And it was an interesting encounter for the listeners when guest speaker Mrs Vee Ellis of Stratton told of an inspirational fellow traveller she meets on a regular bus journey.
This lady, while facing many challenges both financial and personal, is a true disciple of Christ, said Mrs Ellis. “She is consumed by her faith, and shows humility and grace in difficult times. It is not in her nature to ask for support - she is happy to know God is by her side in all situations. She is almost like a reincarnation of Mother Teresa.”
Mrs Ellis reminded her audience that we are all “on a journey”, and of the importance of being a good listener, especially in the aftermath of the Covid pandemic and all its effects. Many people find retirement difficult; many are lonely. Sometimes, just to let someone unburden themselves, over the phone or in person, is a great comfort.
The talk concluded with heartfelt prayers by Mrs Ellis, who said: “You can pray anywhere – you don’t have to go into a building.”
The Thursday Friendship Group meets in the Bodmin Street Blue Room or chapel hall, from 2pm to 3.30pm, where everyone is welcome to come and share a cup of tea or coffee, a slice of cake and a chat.
Guest speakers are regularly planned for alternate Thursdays, and on the other Thursdays, the group holds games and quiz afternoons.
