HAVE you ever wanted to travel back in time and see what it was like to live in the past? Last weekend, Holsworthy was transported back to the 1940’s.

From July 26 to July 28, Holsworthy ‘44 transformed the town, welcoming residents and visitors to enjoy and explore what Devon might have looked like in wartime conditions.

Hundreds descended on the town for three days of time travelling. The event had something for everyone with classic car parades, military displays, 1940’s dance evenings, and even a display from a real-life Sherman Tank used in the film Fury.

The occasion even featured live skirmishes on the battlefield and a Devon versus Cornwall boxing event.

As well as offering a chance to celebrate wartime attitudes, activities and engineering, the event also provided an opportunity to reflect on those who gave their lives during the period, as residents and visitors paid tribute with a Remembrance ceremony.

Following the event’s success residents have been raving about the occasion.

One local said: “I hope you don’t mind my using this page to say a huge thank you to the Holsworthy 44 Committee and team for creating this weekends rather unique event.

“I understand this was the first time the team had put on a show of this size and I have to say I think they did a superb job.”
