Audrey Cornish was presented with the civic honour of Freeman of Holsworthy at the annual town's meeting on Thursday, April 16. Mayor David Smith said: "It's always a very difficult task for the town council to do as there are so many deserving people in Holsworthy. It was very difficult to choose." Audrey Cornish was somebody Cllr Smith had known since he arrived at Holsworthy over 30 years ago as she was involved at the time with the pre-school playgroup and holiday play scheme. Mrs Cornish was later a member of the Holsworthy Community College PTA. She has been involved with the Holsworthy Day Centre for around 20 years, something she said she thoroughly enjoyed. She was a member of the Red Cross for several years and received a commendation certificate for 10 years service. She is also a member of the Holsworthy Hospital League of Friends and helps out regularly with the Wednesday coffee mornings in the Memorial Hall. Mrs Cornish, originally from Bude, moved to Holsworthy almost 43 years ago after marrying her husband Claude. The couple have two children and seven grandchildren. Mrs Cornish said she was "thrilled" to be chosen as Freeman: "I think the word I used was 'flabbergasted' when the town clerk Mrs Dalley phoned!"
