POLICE are searching for a couple dubbed Boscastle’s ‘Bonnie and Clyde' after they were caught on CCTV taking two RNLI charity donation boxes.
Ray Nash, 50, owner of The Toby Jug Café in Boscastle, said he was “angry” after a man and a woman reportedly stole the charity boxes from outside of his business.
Police confirmed the first box was stolen on Wednesday, October 9, before the pair returned on Sunday, October 13, to take the other box.
Dubbing them 'Boscastle's Bonnie and Clyde', Mr Nash said the situation has left him angry.
He said: "It is consuming my life at the moment. RNLI are people who go out and save lives. The money we raise helps them doing that.
"They go out there with the coastguards and they save people from dying. We live in a part of the world where they are part of our daily lives.
"Last year we raised a couple hundred quid from both boxes. I don't know how much money we had there — £50, £500 — it doesn't matter. It is still equally despicable."
The community of Boscastle has since set up a GoFundMe page to help re-raise the funds for the RNLI.
They have exceeded the original £500 target, raising £916 so far.
Mr Nash said: "The community are angry too. We know who they are and we know where they live."
The business-owner wrote on his café's Facebook page: "We would like to thank you all for your support and it would be remiss not to mention our fellow business owners who trawled through hours of CCTV to provide the police with the footage to enable them to try to get some kind of justice.
"Unfortunately it appears that Boscastle's Bonnie and Clyde have gone to ground, given the fact that they don't appear to be particularly good at covering their tracks I am sure that they will be available for a chat with an officer very soon."
A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed: "Police are investigating following the theft of two RNLI charity boxes from Boscastle.
''The large plastic boxes with a dome cover were taken from outside The Toby Jug Café at The Bridge.
"The first theft happened around 7.15pm on October 9 and the second around 10.30pm on October 13. On both occasions the boxes were dumped by the river or in bushes by Cobweb car park.
"Officers are investigating and seeking two suspects, described as a man and a woman in their 20s. Anyone with information is asked to contact police online or by telephone on 101, quoting crime reference 50240259518."
