A GROUP of Cornish needleworkers are crafting a handmade quilt to raise money for a respite centre for learning disabled adults.

The Flowerpatch Quilters, who meet each month at Cowslip Workshops in Launceston, have been working since November on creating the panels for the double sized quilt.

Among the needleworkers is support worker Nicki Cruickshank who works at Hft’s respite service in Tregadillet.

The group craft a quilt each year which goes on show at its annual exhibition.

When Nicki shared where she worked with the group, they decided to raffle off the quilt to raise money for Hft.

It is hoped that the raffle will raise around £2,000, with the money going towards the cost of a basket swing for the sensory garden at Chy Keres respite centre.

Nicki said: “Each member is given a pack to put together for the quilt and we each create two panels. We started in November so it’s been quite a long process, but it’s something that we all enjoy very much.

“It’s wonderful seeing the quilt come together as the panels are joined together and knowing that the money raised will go to such a good cause.”

The Flowerpatch Quilters annual exhibition will run throughout August at the workshops for people to enjoy their handiwork.

The raffle will be drawn once the exhibition is over, with the winner being presented with the quilt.

Chy Keres Service Manager Sam Zilkha added: “The people we support love it when we visit somewhere which has a basket swing.

“It gives them a real feeling of freedom using it, even more so for those who have limited mobility and it helps people with autism to regulate their sensory input.”

Raffle tickets will go on sale at the exhibition in the first week of August, at Cowslip Workshop and through members of the Flowerpatch Quilters.
