Bude
Parkhouse Centre
There was a buzz of lively conversation in the main hall of the Parkhouse Centre in Bude on April 3 as more than 100 people gathered for the annual Bude Inner Wheel charity lunch.
This is a much enjoyed event in Bude’s social calendar which, apart from a necessary break in 2020 for COVID, has been taking place for 40 years and has many dedicated followers.
A delicious two course lunch was served, entertainment was provided by a pianist and there was a beautifully presented raffle table which was very generously patronised.

This year’s Inner Wheel president, Di McDougall, welcomed the guests and told everyone that her charities this year are Cancer and Leukaemia in Children , Bude Sea Pool and Bude Exercising for Mobility.
The lunch has raised a significant amount for these charities and Bude Inner Wheel would like to thank everyone who attended for their generosity in helping to make this happen.
The club will be celebrating its 60th anniversary this year and will be having an exhibition of its history in May at the Castle in Bude which we hope people will visit to find out more about us.
Holsworthy
Holsworthy Amateur Theatrical Society (HATS)
Holsworthy Amateur Theatrical Society (HATS) are in a bit of pickle and are hoping someone in the community can help.
As many of you will know, we recently completed a two week run of our pantomime Cinderella which attracted an amazing 2,800 of you supporting us for which we are extremely grateful. We were also thrilled that more young people joined the ‘family’ for the show.
However, we are not sitting back on our laurels. We’re already busy rehearsing for ‘Let’s Celebrate’ (May 8th-10th), written by our Lesley and Mike Wonnacott to mark 80 years since the end of World War II. Lesley directing and Mike wielding the conductors baton. This will be followed by ‘The Ghost Train’ in July and in September we have the return of ‘The Vicar of Dibley Christmas’.
With so many fantastic young members joining us, which we absolutely love, we’re bursting at the seams and has presented us with logistical challenges. We have overcome the necessity of providing supervision with several of our senior members becoming qualified chaperones but our physical space limitations are becoming increasingly problematic. At present our young people being ‘squeezed’ into our wardroberooms among the costumes to apply their make-up and change costumes, which is far from ideal.
We urgently require additional dry and airy space to store some of our costumes and props. Somewhere not too far from the theatre would be perfect. We have looked at vacant places in town but honestly the prices would eat into the funds we need to keep the theatre shipshape and allow us to continue to make improvements in creating those magical shows for your enjoyment.
Do you have a barn or large garage sitting empty that we could use? Maybe a shed or outbuilding that needs a purpose in life. We would be so grateful. Any help that you are able to offer would benefit our community’s cultural life and provide better opportunities for our young performers.
Please drop us a line at [email protected] if you think you are able to help – even if you’re not sure, lets chat about it.
Thank you so much for being the amazing, supportive community that makes HATS possible. We really couldn’t do it without you.
Bradworthy
Methodist Church
Bradworthy Methodist Church held a Sankey Evening on the evening of Mothering Sunday.
Rev Shirley Henderson of Woolsery chaired the evening and the guest organist was Colin Tape of Morwenstow. The Chapel was full for the evening and had been tastefully decorated with camellias.
No less than seventeen Sankey and favourite hymns were sung in twos, with Rev Shirley giving us some thoughtfully thought out poems and thoughts, some about Mothering Sunday and some about other things, which certainly moved us and made us think, in-between each two hymns.
Rev Shirley thanked all who had travelled from far and wide for the occasion, with special thanks to Colin for playing the organ in his usual fine style, Clive Smale for operating the technical equipment and to Shirley Davis for organising the evening. The usual sumptuous supper followed in the Sunday School Room.
The offerings were taken up by Marion Pomeroy and Lynda Smale, the total of which was £438 which was for chapel funds.
Boyton
Methodist Chapel
Mothering Sunday worship at Boyton Methodist Chapel was ably led by Sue Martyn with Lorraine Sluggett presiding at the organ. Readings, poems and prayers were contributed by those present. This very special service will be led by former president of the Methodist Conference, Rev Gill Newton (nee Duke). This will be followed by afternoon tea.
Easter Sunday worship to celebrate the joy of Easter Day will be held at the chapel at 11am and will be led by Sheila Burt of Trebullett.
