THE community of Port Isaac and North Cornwall is in mourning in the aftermath of the tragic accident which has robbed sea shanty group The Fisherman's Friends of two of their number.

A falling metal door killed the group's tour manager, Paul McMullen, and critically injured singer Trevor Grills, 54, from Port Isaac, who has since died in hospital.

The group said on their website on Tuesday: "The Fisherman's Friends announce with great sadness that their friend and fellow band member Trevor Grills passed away last night as a result of severe head injuries inflicted during an accident on Saturday, February 9.

"Trevor was a much loved and valued friend to all of us and was an integral part of the Port Isaac community.

"He will be sadly missed. Our thoughts are with Trevor's family at this very difficult time."

The Fisherman's Friends, a ten-member group, were to be the headline act in the Cornish & Devon Post Annual Gala Concert at Penstowe Leisure Suite, Kilkhampton, this Friday night.

The 'Post' has now called off the event, which had been a virtual sell-out, out of respect for those directly affected by the tragedy.

Readers who bought tickets for the gala — at which the Fisherman's Friends performed to rapturous applause and acclaim in 2012 — can contact Mr Bill Roberts on 01566 778215, for a refund or donate the ticket price to be shared between the hospice and a fund to help the families of Mr Grills and Mr McMullen.
