A CORNISH charity has expressed its need for more volunteers to help support its important community work in Bude.
The Wave Project was founded in 2010, offering the world's first surf therapy course funded by a government health service.
Based in Cornwall, the charity has expanded across the southwest of England to North Yorkshire, Scotland, Northern Ireland and London.
Now encompassing 33 staff and more than 1,500 trained volunteer surf mentors, the charity has put out the call for more volunteers to help its mission.
So far, more than 10,000 young people having accessed The Wave Project surf therapy courses and in 2022, more than 2,000 children and young people were supported by the charity’s work.
Speaking to the Post, a spokesperson explained some of the benefits of the surf therapies.
They said: “As an evidence-based intervention, surf therapy is recognised by the NHS, local authorities and psychiatric services as an effective tool in improving the well-being, outlook, self-esteem and confidence of children and young people.”
However, in order to keep sessions available to young people, the charity has expressed the need for volunteers to assist its Sunday sessions in Bude.
Discussing the need for volunteers, a charity spokesperson continued: “Every volunteer at The Wave Project is instrumental in helping to improve the lives of children and young people.
“Our volunteers are the heartbeat of our mission. As a volunteer, you'll play an instrumental role in improving the lives of children and young people. Join our passionate, committed team and be part of the change.
“We are incredibly proud and grateful to have such a talented, passionate and committed group of people as our volunteers. They generously give us their skills, knowledge and time and are vital members of The Wave Project family. Last year alone our volunteers gave up 37,000 hours to help change lives.
“We provide comprehensive training, so you don’t need any previous experience to join our team. All you need is a passion for improving the lives of children and young people.”
