A RUBBER duck race has been hailed a success after playing a part in the four-day festival of fun in Camelford.
A series of events by the community, for the community were organised by Camelford Town Council and local groups.
One of these events was the annual rubber duck race, where entrants stood by the water hoping that it was their duck that crossed the finish line first.
In total 190 yellow rubber ducks were launched into the watercourse, while the sun shone down on the scene of the event.
After a slight delay from the original 4pm starting time, the duck race took place, with the ‘duck fishermen’ in place at the other side of the finish line waiting to catch the racers.
Violet and Jasmin were the winners of the event and despite some setbacks, those in attendance enjoyed the event as people anxiously waited to see which rubber duck would pass the line first.
Those who took part, and in particular those who got wet, were thanked by Camelford Town Council for their participation, with the money raised being donated to the Camelford Voluntary Gardeners, a local community group.
A spokesperson for Camelford Town Council said: “Camelford annual duck race... oh what fun we had! This year saw 190 ducks involved in the race, and once again the sun was shining for us (just about). At around 4.15pm (only slightly late), the duck fishermen, adorned in waders, were ready at the finish line... then the ducks were released!
“There was a growing sense of anticipation from the crowd that had gathered around the finish line as the ducks rounded the corner and headed down the final straight. The crowd waited with baited breath (and continued to do so for some time due to a problem with the loud hailer), before it was finally announced that Violet and Yasmin were the winners!
“Thank you very much to everyone who took part (and a special thanks to those who got wet!): all the money raised has been donated to the Camelford Voluntary Gardeners.”
