A COMPETITION for aspiring artists has been launched in Bude as part of community celebrations relating to the move of the Compass Point.
Children and young adults between the ages of 3 and 19 have been invited to take part in the Compass Point art competition, with prizes awaiting the top three artworks in each category.
The prizes on offer include a £100 voucher and certificate for first place, £50 voucher and certificate for second place and £25 voucher and certificate for third place.
All first place winners will have their artwork displayed in a dedicated Compass Point exhibition held at the end of each year, with one finalist selected to also receive a limited edition print of the original architects’ drawing for the storm tower.
“The art competition invites young artists to express their personal reflections and emotions,” said Mike Dawe, Mayor of Bude and Stratton. “We really wanted to engage and inspire the younger members of our community, and we look forward to witnessing the exceptional creativity and passion of our talented participants.”
Participants in the competition are asked to create pieces on the theme ‘Express how the tower and its move makes you feel’ – referring to the recent move of the Compass Point tower to protect it from the impact of coastal erosion.
Artworks can comprise a range of different formats to suit the individual; with submissions using pen, paint, collage or digital all welcomed. All entries must be in an A4 size.
The competition, run by Bude-Stratton Town Council closes on Friday, July 7 at 4pm and full details and how to submit entries into the competition can be found on the Bude-Stratton Town Council website.
A spokesperson for Bude-Stratton Town Council said: “To mark the significance of the Compass Point Project to save the Storm Tower, we’re running an art competition that’s open to all ages, across the community and educational settings.
“The aim is to capture this historical moment through the community’s eyes, with winning entries forming part the Compass Point Exhibition at the end of the year.
“There is no better way to celebrate the spirit of our beloved Pepper Pot than through the eyes of the community it belongs to!
