AN organisation supporting underprivileged children based in Bude has received a national award for its work.

Liam Dart has been running Bude-based company LJD Coaching’s holiday programme since Easter 2022. The programme provides multi-sports, music and dance activities for children during the school holidays.

The aim is to offer activities, exercise and a hot meal to those who otherwise may not have access to such things.

This week, the organisation’s work has been recognised at the South West regional and national HAF Holiday Programme Awards 2024.

Run as part of Active Cornwall’s Time 2 Move initiative, the programme is fully funded for children from Pupil Premium families, ensuring access to vital holiday provisions for those who need it most. LJD Coaching stepped in to bring this opportunity back to Bude in 2022 after previously successfully delivering similar programmes through Budehaven Community School.

Since Easter 2022, Bude-Stratton Town Council has also supported the programme, providing funding to enable LJD Coaching to provide thousands of subsidised places for children in the local area. The programme offers multi-sports, music, and dance activities alongside a nutritious hot meal, helping children from less advantaged backgrounds stay active and supported during school holidays.

The initiative's impact has been immense, with other towns now looking to replicate Bude's model. This success was celebrated at the House of Commons on November 28, 2024, where LJD Coaching was announced as both South West Regional Winners and National Winner of the HAF Holiday Programme Awards.

Cllr Philippa Purchase commented on the achievement, saying: “We are thrilled to see LJD Coaching’s hard work and dedication recognised at the highest level. This programme is a shining example of what can be achieved through community collaboration and support, and we are proud to have played a part in making it possible."

Bude-Stratton Town Council has extended heartfelt congratulations to LJD Coaching.

A spokesperson added: “These remarkable achievements, which reflect their dedication and hard work in supporting local families. The council is honoured to have played a part in this success and remains committed to championing initiatives that benefit the community.”
