Bude Carnival is a much-loved tradition that has been bringing joy to the town and surrounding area since 1920 — and this year, Saturday, August 17, will be its 104th.
Back in the early days of the carnival, it featured a ‘Grand Torch-Light Procession’, a ‘Grand Masked Confetti Fete’, and even hourly concerts by four Jolly Sailor Men. The aim was not only to entertain but also to raise funds, benefiting institutions such as the Stratton Cottage Hospital.
Some historical context:
Although the outbreak of war led to a pause in the festivities, the spirit of the carnival persevered. In 1946, the first carnival after the war took place on the August Bank Holiday, featuring not only a Carnival Queen but also a Carnival King, two pages, and seven attendants. The community's commitment to this event is evident, as the carnival has continued without fail every year since, now taking place on the third Saturday of August.
Over time, the carnival has evolved to include various activities such as live music, dance performances and carnival floats, becoming a beloved tradition for both locals and visitors.
So, what can you expect from this iconic event?
The daytime fete at the Bude rugby pitch promises a vibrant atmosphere with stalls and entertainment from 11am to 3pm. To make the most of this experience, visitors are encouraged to park at the Crescent car park and walk to the rugby club, as parking at the club is reserved for disabled access only.
Sarah Miller, chair lady of the group, explained how the carnival impacts the community.
She said: "The carnival is a great day for Bude and generates a lot of extra income for local businesses and pleasure for all those who take part.
"The current long-standing committee have done a brilliant job."
As the sun begins to set, the main carnival procession kicks off at 6.30pm from the Bude Rugby Club, and as the parade weaves its way through the town, traffic restrictions will be in place. So, mark those calendars and join the fun by either participating in the carnival or lining the route to cheer on the participants.
Whether people choose to take part or simply soak in the lively atmosphere, Bude Carnival promises a day filled with excitement and community spirit.
When the main carnival procession leaves the rugby club there will be traffic restrictions in operation around the town. The full daytime timetable is available on the carnival website.
